Why do Strategic Planning?

Strategic planning is an inclusive process with the staff and board to discern organizational priorities, create strategy around those priorities, and define clear action steps to execute on them.

It supports the leaders on the board and at the staff level so they can be intentional rather than reactive in their work, and keep them from competing tasks that are not a part of the plan.

It ensures priorities are in line with your mission, vision, and values; and considers internal and external environmental factors.

It serves as the guide for fundraising, acquisition and allocation of resources (human capital, buildings, spending) to achieve these priorities over a 2–3 year time period.

It results in a tangible plan that will structure staff work, board reporting, committee structure, board development, and metrics for measuring institutional success.

A Strategic Planning process covers:

  • Creating a timeline and framework for the planning process
  • Facilitating strategic planning committee meetings
  • Environmental scan: SWOT analysis
  • Interviews and survey with key stakeholders
  • Facilitating the board retreat strategic planning session
  • Drafting the strategic plan, including goals, action plan, timeline and resources
